Its been a project more than two years in the making and finally the Transport for London have released the Urban Motorcycle Design Handbook to the public in a bid “to properly consider the interests and safety of all PTW riders – including riders pf mopeds, scooters and motorbikes.”

The Motorcycle Design Handbook is available online in PDF format and can be viewed or downloaded from the following government link : www.gov.uk/urban-motorcycle-design-handbook

Within its digital bindings, the handbook sets out ‘key highway design requirements for motorcycle safety’ in London and its neighbouring boroughs.

As part of the TfL’s push to educate more road users on motorcycle safety, in recent weeks the Police have been stationed at junctions at key times which are well known as accident hotspots across London pulling in road users and passing over leaflets for bike courses they can take part in an area near them.

The handbook’s release comes at a crucial time after the Transport for London published figures showing that motorcycle and scooter accidents were on the increase in the City and that the number of deaths had risen from 27 in 2014 to 36 in 2015.

Leon Daniels, TfL’s managing director of surface transport, said:

“We are fully committed to making London’s roads safer for all, and with this focus on motorcycle and scooter safety, bringing down the number of collisions involving this vulnerable road user group.”

“The three Es – enforcement, education and engineering – are central to this. On-street education and enforcement, substantial investment in improving rider skills and guidance to help engineers design roads so that they are safer for riders, all form part of a concerted effort to improve road safety in the capital.”
