motorbike roundabout accidents

Road traffic accidents at roundabouts are very common. The majority of car accidents that occur on them are due to drivers being in the wrong lanes. This can lead to confusion and consequent collisions, and for a motorbike rider, the risk of injury may be higher due to lessened visibility and protection when compared to a car.

When using roundabouts, all drivers must be aware of the cars around them. Reduced visibility due to rain or fog may hinder drivers from noticing other vehicles, especially smaller motorbikes which are harder to see even when views are clear. Although motorbike riders must always take caution and never assume that cars can see them, drivers absolutely must take extra care to make sure to look out for bikers.

All it takes is just proper concentration on your surroundings – especially in blind spots.

Using roundabouts safely

The Highway Code gives comprehensive instructions on how to use a roundabout in a safe manner. However, collisions occur are likely to occur when drivers are in the wrong lane:

  • Driver must stay in the correct lane and not change lanes without checking for other vehicles – especially motorbikes, which are harder to spot;
  • When joining a roundabout, drivers must take extra care to check for motorbikes as well.

If a driver hits a motorcyclist because they didn’t see them until it was too late, or if they caused the motorcyclist to crash because they had to unexpectedly brake or swerve, then a Road Traffic Claim can be made for the rider. Road Traffic Accidents for riders are particularly dangerous as bikes offer fearless protection when compared to cars.
