It’s January: Christmas is over, the kids are back at school and the roads are busy again!

It’s common knowledge that one of the main reasons bikers are more likely to be injured in a road accident is because drivers fail to see them. There are all sorts of reasons as to why a driver fails to spot a biker on the roads, but ultimately, failing to keep a proper lookout is not a valid excuse.

Now that Christmas is over, the kids are back at school and the roads are full again as commuters rush to and from work, it’s time to remember that this is the kind of occasion when accidents can be more likely to occur.

With drivers distracted by the January blues in darker and gloomier climes, bikers can be at a greater risk of harm.

It only takes one little thing like a quick lane change in traffic, or rushing through a junction, to end up seriously harming a biker. Sometimes, it’s those little manoeuvres that are carried out with too little care that lead to a biker being hurt in a road accident. Using the above examples, a quick glance in a wing-mirror isn’t enough to spot a biker when swiftly switching lanes in anger at a tailback in traffic. A cursory glance at the approaching road on a junction may not be enough to spot a biker either.

Whatever the cause, there’s no excuse when a driver says they didn’t see you. If you are a biker and you have been hit by a distracted or careless driver, you have every right to make a claim for motorbike accident compensation. A pay-out for the injury, as well as expenses and costs for lost earnings, bike repairs and gear can also be included.

You’re entitled to claim, and there’s no excuse!

Bikers must take care too

We say this a lot, but bikers have to take extra care as well. It’s not about any sort of above-than-expected responsibility to take care, it’s about expecting something to happen.

It can be wise to expect that the cold, dark month of January may be a time when distracted drivers suffering the post-Christmas blues can be more careless. Although the duty is on the drivers to ensure they don’t do something daft like a quick lane change or emerging from a junction dangerously, it could save your life to be more aware of the potential dangers. Even slowing down a little more – even when you don’t have to – could make a huge difference in the event a driver does something reckless.
