Start Your Claim NowBroken legs from motorbike crashes are common. In the event of a collision, motorcyclists are not afforded a great deal of protection when compared to car drivers.
For this reason, bikers are always susceptible to more complicated and serious injuries.
In direct impact cases, motorcyclists’ legs are easily broken or crushed. Even Ewan McGregor couldn’t escape a broken leg after a freak accident back in March 2007. His advice? “Just keep your eyes in your mirrors. Bikers are vulnerable”.
According to general medical advice, minor fractures can take between 6-8 weeks to heal, with larger fractures taking several months to half a year. More complicated fractures can take much longer than half a year, and if they fail to set properly, the patient may have a deformed leg and may suffer pain for the rest of their lives.
Complications can include damage to muscles, damage to nerves, damage blood vessel, bone infections, and problems like compartment syndrome.
Generally speaking, bone on bone heals rather well; but this is of course dependent on the extent of the damage and the extent of surrounding tissue damage too.
It’s unlikely for a motorcyclist to have a simple minor fracture after a crash. They are likely to need surgery followed by regular physiotherapy sessions to regain function of the broken limb. Whilst in a cast, patients should usually not drive or do any physical activity that may strain the broken leg. Having a broken leg can be a huge burden that impedes the patient’s ability to move around and even go to work. For a biker, it can be worse when you’re unable to even ride out again for a while, too.
