Help & advice for motorbike compensation claims

Common motorcycle injury claims

One of the biggest concerns for motorcyclists is suffering an injury while on-the-road. Motorcycles obviously don’t offer you the same protection whilst driving like a car does, which means that a motorcycle rider is more at risk if there is a collision. As a result of this, motorcyclists are 16 times more likely to be seriously injured or killed than the other driver involved in the collision.

Whilst helmets and protective gear are recommended to reduce injuries, if a collision or accident was to happen, riders can still suffer some serious damage to their bodies.

There is also the risk of psychological scarring that riders can suffer in extreme cases alongside their physical injuries.

Most common injuries

Head injuries

Despite wearing a helmet, head injuries are still very common in motorbike accidents. In some cases head injuries can result in severe brain damage, which is an injury we’re used to helping people for.

Back injuries

As a motorcycle offers little protection, being thrown from a motorcycle can do serious damage to a person’s back. This can include a disc prolapse or a fractured vertebrae. In some cases people can suffer paraplegia (paralysis affecting the body waste down) or quadriplegia (full or partial paralysis of all limbs).

Arm injuries

Riders can suffer fractures on the forearm that can cause deformities, disabilities, and in some cases, amputation.

Leg injuries

The leg can be fractured in different areas but which, like the arm, can also lead to deformities, disabilities, and in some cases, amputation.

Psychiatric injury

A collision on a motorcycle can leave a person with serious psychological injuries – commonly post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A collision can cause someone to experience intense fear or a feeling of helplessness. This can lead people to have difficulty sleeping or concentrating, and re-experience the trauma of the accident. This can affect people’s ability to cope with life, work and relationships, with family and friends also suffering as people’s personalities can change after an accident.

Can I claim?

If you have been injured in the last three years then you may be able to claim for compensation if it was the result of the other driver’s negligent or reckless behaviour. You will also need to establish that the injuries that were suffered was a result of the accident and that the defendant was legally responsible for the collision and therefore the injuries.

You are entitled to compensation if the accident was not your fault. If you have sadly loved a lost one due to a motorcycle collision with another vehicle then you can make a claim on behalf of the deceased victim.
