30 motorcyclists are killed or injured every day at junctions

If the above headline hasn’t shocked you, then we’ve wrote a few more facts below which should make you think twice about taking more care to look out for motorcyclists on the road.

  • 365 (up 8% from 2014) motorcyclists in Britain died on our roads, and 5,042 were seriously hurt
  • Motorcyclists accounted for just 1% of road traffic but 21% of all U.K. road deaths
  • 91% of all U.K. motorcycle casualties were male and 32% were aged between 17 and 24

Statistics taken from https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/556396/rrcgb2015-01.pdf

Such statistics should serve to make drivers pay far more attention to look out specifically for bikers, and maybe save someone’s life by doing so!

Motorcyclists have as much right to use the roads as other motorists, but the dangers for bikers are far, far greater.

Too many preventable accidents occur because of carelessness or oversight. All road users need to ensure they follow traffic rules to the best of their ability and we can all help to create a safer environment for motorists.

A Motorcyclist can be much harder to spot on the road than a regular car, so more time and caution must be taken to identify them. With so many motorcyclist deaths and injuries happening at junctions, it’s time for drivers to stop and reconsider if they use them correctly and safely.

And it really isn’t hard – only move when you’ve looked, looked, and looked again (at least), and only when you can be 100% confident that the road you’re merging on to is totally clear.

The dangers are real…

Many still don’t recognise just how dangerous junctions are for bikers and other road users. Here at the Motorbike Injury Lawyers, we’ve seen some serious injuries after collisions at road junctions.

If trees and/or other parked vehicles obstruct a driver’s view at a junction then crawl forward to get a better view. Even if a driver thinks it’s safe, they should check several times before moving out, because the alternative can have life changing implications for everyone involved!

Let’s put it another way… If a driver does pull out in to the path of an oncoming motorcycle there may be little time for the biker to slow down or swerve properly. Even at general speeds of 30mph – injuries can be devastating.

Depending on the force of impact, and vehicle type, concussion, broken bones and serious head injuries are not uncommon. As our headline testifies, fatalities occur far too often as well…

For bikers, drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, road junctions should be treated with respect and extra care should be applied to help improve these accident black spots.
